Bed and Sofa, which is considered an example beyond its time and one of the important firsts with the representation of women in the cinema, celebrates the strong and independent female identity born out of a love triangle.
Living in a small one-bedroom apartment in post-revolution Moscow, the lives of Liuda and her stonemason husband, Kolia, change when Kolia invites his old friend Volodia, who cannot find a job or a place to stay in Moscow, to their home to sleep on the sofa. For Liuda, who is bored with her monotonous life, the routine of daily housework and her husband's indifferent attitude, the presence of the kind and helpful Volodia, who treats her with care becomes more and more seductive. Liuda and Volodia, who could not stand the attraction between them while Kolia was out of town for work, continue to live in a love triangle after Kolia's return to home. But now it is Kolia who is lying on the sofa, and Volodia is taking a place for himself in Liuda's bed. Over time, this triangle, which settled into its own routine, ceases to be exciting for Liuda, as Volodia undergoes a transformation as a husband that makes even Kolia a better husband. Feeling trapped in an unsatisfied and suffocating life, Ludia's breaking point will be her pregnancy and the reactions of the two men in her life to this pregnancy.
Bed and Sofa, the most popular film by Abram Room, the Stalin Prize-winning director of Soviet cinema, is also one of the rare examples of period films that does not contain propaganda about state policy. The film, which clearly exhibits the contradictions and deadlocks of the society in the early post-revolutionary Soviet Russia; with its anti-heroes, which we are not accustomed to seeing in the Soviet Realism movement, and its critical view of the sexual freedoms brought by the revolutionary period, it is a unique silent cinema treasure in many aspects…

Abram Room, one of the important directors of Soviet Union cinema; After working as a dentist, journalist, theater actor and director, he started his cinema journey with his first movie The Vodka Chase in 1924. His signature in The Five Year Plan (1930), the first sound film shot in the Soviet Union, Room, with its cinematic approach centered on living people, was just opposite the thesis on cinema of Sergey Eisenstein, one of the most important directors of Soviet Russia. Room 1925, which has films such as Traitor (1926), The Ghost That Never Returns (1929), Criminals (1933), Invasion (1945), School for Scandal (1952), Late Flowers (1969) and The Untimely Man (1973) – He also paarticipated as a senior lecturer at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) between 1934.
