Adapted as a silent film with the same name from the 1918 Broadway show of the Samuel Shipman and John B. Hymer, East is West is the story of Ming Toy, who was rescued by the American Billy Benson and sent to San Francisco under the custody of Lo Sang Kee when she was just about to be sold as a slave, as a romantic drama that predomiinantly holds comedy elements. Ming Toy, who attracts the attention of Charley Yong, one of the important figures of Chinatown in San Francisco, refuses the interest of this prestigious suitor, and becomes the subject of an increasingly complex story in the network of relations he is in.

East is West, directed by Sidney Franklin, one of the prolific names of early Hollywood cinema, returning from the brink of extinction despite its prestigious production team and cast that included important actors, was considered to be a lost silent film until the Orphan Film Symposium screening in 2014, where its restored copy premiered.

The nitrate edition of the 1922 original version of this film, which is mostly known by the world with its 1930 sound version, was transferred from a private collection to Nederlands Filmmuseum in 2005 and was restored to the world cinema archive by the EYE Filmmuesum after a difficult restoration process that took about six years.

East is West, where especially Constance Talmadge (Ming Toy) and Warner Oland (Charley Yong) show their comedic talents with their performances, offers an enjoyable silent movie spectacle that you can rarely find the opportunity to watch.
