Percussion group sa.ne.na is at the forefront of contemporary music in Istanbul, presenting audiences with a diverse spectrum of music from rock to classical. Their music makes use of the traditional alongside the unconventional and the experimental, and each program is an opportunity to explore the constantly evolving musical landscape of the world of percussion.
Over the years, sa.ne.na has presented a number of Turkish premieres by local and international composers like John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Louis Andriessen. In 2019 they collaborated with world-famous percussion group Slagwerk den Haag to bring Steve Reich's minimalist masterpiece "Drumming" to Istanbul audiences for the first time. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2018, sa.ne.na presented works by well-known composers like Toru Takemitsu and John Luther Adams, brand new works by names from the forefront of the percussion world Glenn Kotche and Jason Treuting, as well as their own compositions. In 2016, sa.ne.na performed Michael Gordon's work Timber with interactive lighting, and in 2015 they travelled to Berlin with electronic musician Korhan Erel with a program of Electro-Acoustic Dance Music including Frederic Rzewski's Coming Together. In the past, sa.ne.na has shared the stage with Istanbul based Indie bands like 123 and Puik's Journey to collaborate on original works alongside pieces like Frank Zappa's Black Page and Terry Riley's In C. Their repertoire includes important and little known works by composers like John Cage, Steve Reich, Paul Lansky, and Elliot Cole.
sa.ne.na is involved in educational and mentorship projects with local young composers and the MIAM Percussion Ensemble to bring a variety of new projects to life. Together they gave the Turkish premiere of Edgard Varese's seminal work for percussion ensemble, Ionisation, more than 80 years after it was written. Upcoming projects include their 15th anniversary retrospective concerts, a community collaboration to present the musical soundscape of John Luther Adams' Inuksuit, more Turkish premiers of works by Steve Reich, and more. sa.ne.na continues to march to its own beat in today's ever-changing musical world.
