The action movie by the master French director Luc Besson of 1995, Léon: The Professional is regarded amongst the all-time best enchanting movies in the history of cinema by its impressive characters and dialogues that simply get in audience’s blood. Representing a significant milestone in the director’s career, the spectacular movie meets the audience once again in Sunday Cinema Club event at Kundura Cinema held on the last Sunday of every month, in the memory of Sunday night cinema zone in the 80s and 90s.

The movie starts when Mathilda, a 12 year old girl whose whole family is murdered, rings the bell of their neighbor, the gunman Léon to save her own life, with a flowerpot on one hand, and teddy bear on the other and begs “Please open the door” desperately and in tears she is trying to hide.  Léon: The Professional makes an utterly different remark on innocence, mercy, kindness and love by turning upside down the absolute good and absolute evil definitions in minds.

The main character Léon is portrayed by the master actor Jean Reno. Mathilda is acted out by Natalie Portman, giving hints about her present success nowadays with her stunning performance when she was only 13. Even though the movie essentially focuses on a very special and unordinary bond between these characters, Stansfield, characterized by Gary Oldman, also has a highly important role in the impressiveness of the story.  The innocent bond between Léon and Mathilda touches the audience’s heart a bit more, because of the incredibly evil character Stansfield.

It is said that the director Besson laid the foundations of the movie Léon: The Professional with his previous movie Nikita. Victor in the movie Nikita is also a gunman and acted out by Jean Reno again. Nevertheless, unlike Léon, Victor keeps in the background in Nikita. This must have annoyed Besson later, since the famous actor then meets the audience in the foreground via a humanistic gunman role.  Léon is amongst the most unforgettable characters in the history of cinema both by exactly these reasons and the contrasts it incorporates; the character almost sticks in audience’s mind with its short but effective opinions about life throughout the movie.
