Director Sarah Gavron takes the audience to the beginning of 20th century in the movie Suffragette of 2015. Depicting the Britain after Victorian age, the movie focuses on the suffragette movement defending the women’s right to vote and tells the story of women  from different backgrounds putting up a fight against the male-dominant society for the same purposes.

As a working woman started working at a young age struggling with various problems, Maud Watts meets the suffragette movement during a window breaking protest. Although she feels anxious at first, she cannot help sympathizing the suffragettes demanding equality, with of course the impact of mobbing she experienced in everyday life.  She becomes a part of the movement in time and her life evolves totally. Her representation within the society will also be changing; she will be alienated and found odd. Nevertheless, more importantly, she will have to pay a heavy price.

The screenplay of the movie basing on a true story and pointing out a highly critical era in the struggle of women’s rights was written by Abi Morgan, the scriptwriter of the movies The Invisible Woman and The Iron Lady as well.  Carey Mulligan plays the starring role, who we know from An Education, Never Let Me Go and Shame.  Moreover, Merly Streep acts out Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the movement. Legendary actress Streep does not have much role in the movie but we see her in utterly impressive scenes.
