English; Turkish sub.

Screenplay | Mark Cousins

The documentary Women Make Film directed by Mark Cousins which met the audience last year in Toronto Film Festival will be screened at Kundura Cinema in April.  The documentary tells the story of 183 female directors, amongst whom there are Tilda Swinton, Jane Fonda, Thandie Newton and Debra Winger.

The documentary with duration of nearly 14 hours, Women Make Film will be screened in five different sessions. These five separate sections can be interpreted as a whole, and each can independently be identified as a separate documentary as well. You may therefore take a long journey to the women’s cinema by watching all the sessions, or, prefer those in your area of interest and enjoy your time.

The first session that will be held on April 04th, 2020 Saturday focuses on how the female movie makers create their own language, along with their character definitions, dialogue uses and frame techniques. On the other hand, the second session taking place on April 05th, 2020 Sunday addresses the topics like stage use, budget management and fiction. Female director’s stance against the concepts of body, sexuality, religion and politics is examined closer in the third session dated April 22, 2020 Saturday. The fourth session on Sunday, April 12th brings to the agenda the relation between the female movie makers and melodrama & science-fiction, together with the depictions of hell and the rhythm of narration they form. The last session on Saturday, April 18th focuses on how the directors address the concepts of love, death and existence, as well as their use of music and dance.

The documentary Women Make Film which can often be described as a sort of cinema lesson from the women’s perspective aims to bring into forefront the female heroes remained hidden or pushed into the background within this male-dominant sector, by taking the audience a long journey into the history of cinema.
