Silke Huysmans & Hannes Dereere
Silke Huysmans (Brazil, 1989) studied drama at KASK School of Arts Ghent, and Hannes Dereere (Belgium, 1990) studied theatre sciences at Ghent University. The Brussels based duo investigate the use of journalistic and documentary elements within theatre. At the heart of their works lies the extensive fieldwork which they use to shape their projects. Since 2016, they have been working on a trilogy that involves a long-termed research on mining. The first performance, titled “Mining Stories” told the account of 2015 dam burst in Brazil which became one of the biggest ecological mining disasters in recent history. The performance was exhibited at the Bâtard Festival in Brussels and and received the main prize at the Zürcher Theaterspektakel in 2018. In 2019, the second part of the series “Pleasant Island” in which they hold up a mirror to the world through the island state Nauru, premiered at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. The duo’s concluding piece of the trilogy, titled “Out of the Blue”, sketched an in-depth portrait of an deep sea mining industry through interviews and conversations.
